Twelve stylised seahorse heads

Twelve stylised seahorse heads (1968)

Glass fibre seahorse heads with copper-sprayed finish by JRM McCCheyne

The twelve stylised sea-horse heads mounted at the top of the Civic Centre's tower are a reminder that Newcastle was a seaport. Each head is 1.4m high and 1.6m wide and made of glass fibre. The finish is a copper spray but was originally intended to be gold leaf. If you look carefully you can see eight smaller sea horse heads above on the beacon in the middle. The sculptor J.R. Murry McCheyne was Master of Sculpture at Kings College Newcastle which is now Newcastle University.
