Nine Flambeaux

Nine Flambeaux (1968)

Nine cast iron torches with sculptured metal braziers by Charles Sansbury.

The design of the nine flambeaux (torches) both complements the crowning feature of Civic Centre's carillon tower and refers to the castles of the City's crest. The flambeaux are ignited on special occasions and burn with a 1.5m gas flame. This way they symbolically revive the ancient custom of blazing tar barrels outside the Old Guildhall in Sandhill (Quayside) during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.
