Ceremonial mask from New Caledonia

The Mask

Kate always has a smile on her face when she looks at the Mask. Aware that her hair affects her whole body image, whenever she looks at the mask she always chuckles to herself thinking, "well, my hair isn't so bad today after all"….. He is such a crazy dude, Kate absolutely loves him.

This mask comes from the northern regions of New Caledonia and would have been used in mourning ceremonies. It is carved from wood, with a human hair headdress and feathers stuck onto a net framework. On the mask the ringlets which represent the beard are also made of human hair. These masks were thought to contain the spirits of ancestors, and frightened the uninitiated.
